Terpenes are another class of molecules
that are widely distributed in plant and animal tissues. the structures of
terpenes vary much more than do those of steroids. however,the structures of
terpenes are all related by the fact that they can be considered to be put together by combining units of five
carbons with the structure

how the five-carbon units can be combined head to tail to form compounds with a
variety of structure.
Terpenes are classified according to the number of carbon
atom in the molecules.terpenes with 10 carbon atoms are called monoterpenes;
with 15 carbon atoms ; sesquiterpenes ; with 20 carbon atoms ,diterpenes ; and with 30 carbon atoms
triterpenes.natural rubber and gutta-percha are polymetic terpenes.
Classify the terpenes shown in the preceding
section as mono-,sesquit-,di-,or triterpenes. show the five-carbon structural
units in the following terpenes :

One group of triterpenes has carbon skeletons that closely resemble
those of steroids.an example is dammaradienol,a terpene obtained from the oil
of dammar wood.
